Huichol art is a unique and deeply spiritual artistic expression, created by the indigenous Wixárika or Huichol people of Mexico. Originating from the mountainous regions of Nayarit, Jalisco, Durango, and Zacatecas, the Huichol have preserved their cultural traditions throughout the centuries, and their art offers a fascinating glimpse into their rich worldview and beliefs.
Huichol art is characterized by the use of intricate designs and vibrant combinations of glass and chaquira beads, which are applied to various surfaces such as masks, sculptures, bowls, and ritual objects. The Huichol use a technique called "lost wax," where they place the beads onto a wax base, and then immerse them in hot pine resin, securing the beads in place. This meticulous and labor-intensive process requires extraordinary skill and patience.
